When God Seems Silent and Nothing Is Moving: A Prayer for Today
Have you ever prayed and heard nothing back? No peace. No direction. No sense that anyone is listening. You are doing everything right — showing up, believing, holding on — and yet when God seems silent and nothing is moving, the silence itself becomes the hardest thing to carry.
If that is where you are today, this post is for you.
What to Do When God Seems Silent and Nothing Is Moving
The silence of God is one of the most disorienting experiences in the Christian life. When circumstances do not shift and prayers seem to dissolve before they reach the ceiling, it is easy to conclude that nothing is happening.
But Scripture tells a different story.
In John 5:17 Jesus says: “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” There is no pause button on the work of God. No day off. No season where He steps back and lets things run on their own. The work is unseen — happening in hearts, in circumstances, in the details you cannot track — but it is never stopped.
When God seems silent and nothing is moving in your life, you are not being ignored. You are being trusted with a season that requires faith rather than sight.
You Are Not the First Person to Feel This Way
David Brainerd in the Wilderness
In the 1740s, missionary David Brainerd spent years praying alone in the forests of New Jersey and Pennsylvania — battling tuberculosis, depression, and the crushing sense that his prayers were going nowhere. He wrote in his journal day after day about the silence. The heaviness. The feeling that nothing was moving.
And yet God was working the entire time. Brainerd’s journals, published after his death, went on to ignite a generation of missionaries including William Carey — one of the most consequential mission movements in Christian history.
When God seems silent and nothing is moving, it does not mean God has stopped. It means the work is happening somewhere you cannot yet see.
Every Tuesday and Friday we release a new prayer episode — short, personal, and anchored in Scripture. The 2026 series covers every hard season of the year. Grief. Anxiety. Exhaustion. Loneliness. Waiting. New episodes dropping regularly throughout the year.

Or read and pray it now:
“Hello, this is Chaplain Cox from River of Prayer — and you are loved — by the only One whose love has never had an ulterior motive.”
Father in Heaven,
Your Word tells us — John 5:17 — My Father is working until now, and I am working.
So Lord, we trust the unseen work today. The work You are doing behind the scenes. In the hearts of people. In the circumstances that have not shifted yet. You are working.
Father, this week has felt like nothing is moving. Like heaven has gone quiet. But Your Word says You are always working — even when we cannot see it.
Open our eyes to where You are already moving. Let faith rise where frustration has been living. Let this one trust the process — because the Worker never stops.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“And I want to encourage you that God has never taken a day off from working on your behalf. Not one day. He is working right now.”
“This is your servant Anthony — and thank you for allowing me to pray for you today. God bless you.”
A Final Word
You do not have to stay in the silence alone. God is working right now — in the unseen places, in the things that have not shifted yet, in the circumstances that have not changed. When God seems silent and nothing is moving, that is not the end of the story. It never has been.
